Need a new leg? You might want to check in with Scott Summit, an enterprising San Franciscan who is making quite a name for himself in that department.
Summit is a prosthetist – a maker of artificial body parts, or synthetic limbs. He’s not the only one, there being a long history of such activity dating back more than 2,000 years.
What is distinctive about Summit’s creations is the skill he applies in terms of a design sensibility that turns synthetic limbs into things of beauty.
Speaking recently at his work space on the upper floor of a building near downtown San Francisco, Summit elaborated on the concept of designer limbs:
“The thought was, if it was beautifully sculpted and crafted, it would change … the way the person actually perceives their own body and, hopefully, it would then change the way society sees amputees.”
